Anatomy of a River
River Severn, UK, 2023
by Francesco Russo
The estuary of the River Severn in the United Kingdom has one of the highest tides in the world. As the tide recedes, it reveals rivers within the river, creating intricate patterns and organic shapes reminiscent of the human anatomy. The visual connection between the body of water and the human body reminds us of their interconnection within the same ecological system.
This image is part of Where The Flow Ends, a series documenting the Severn, the longest and most polluted river in the UK. Along its course, human life, industry and nature rise and fall over time, echoing the tides of the Bristol Channel.
