On Editing Nature
Japanese garden culture puts emphasis on seeking a chimerical perfection. While going through the gardens of Kyoto temples, I noticed the discreet silhouettes of the gardeners who work continuously to keep the space unnaturally neat. Accompanying them were all their tools for "nature editing".
I was interested in their hidden character, the fact that they’re needed for the place to remain so close to an ideal. And yet, they aren’t here to be seen let alone to become the object of contemplation.
